Body Contour - About us

New vs Traditional Liposculpture

We are often asked what the differences are between the traditional method of liposuction and the Tumescent Technique.

The traditional method involves the use of larger (6mm) instruments on unprepared fatty tissue under general anaesthetic.

The Tumescent Technique involves specially preparing the fatty tissue with a dilute solution of local anaesthetic/adrenaline, and using microcannulas - instruments only 2 to 3 mm in diameter.

The benefits of the Tumescent Technique are as follows:

Better and more even contour.
Fine instruments allow us to remove fat with greater precision and so to "sculpt" the body.  This requires more time than is possible in traditional liposuction.  Without special preparation of the fatty tissue during traditional liposuction, bleeding causes the surgeon to complete the surgery as quickly as possible.  In tumescent liposculpture, the adrenaline in the tumescent anaesthetic keeps bleeding to an absolute minimum, allowing us the time required to acheive as good a result as is possible.

Virtually no blood loss.
As described above, the adrenaline provides us with virtually blood free field. This is a great improvement over traditional surgeries where blood loss not only prevented this fine tuning but also became a problem in itself.

Tiny scars.
Scars are tiny - around 3 mm in diameter and are generally quite inconspicuous.

Decreased bruising. Bruising is only mild because of the minimal bleeding. This is especially so compared to traditional methods.

Decreased risk of infection.
To the best of our knowledge, no-one has ever developed a serious infection using the Tumescent Technique purely under local anaesthesia. Lignocaine, the local anaesthetic is bactericidal, which means it kills bacteria and so decreases risk.

Improved anaesthetic risk.
It is well recognised that local anaesthesia is considerably safer than general anaesthesia. A recent study of "routine" traditional liposuction under general anaesthesia or sedation, revealed that a fatality occurred once in every 5000 cases. These risks were completely eliminated by using local anaesthesia alone. Another study involving over 15,000 patients undergoing Tumescent Liposculpture (performed solely under local anaesthesia) reported no deaths, and no serious complications of any kind. Further studies  have confirmed these findings.

Faster, easier recovery.
The local anaesthesia persists in the treated areas for more than 12 hours, giving excellent pain relief. Recovery time after Tumescent Liposculpture is relatively short due to minimal blood loss and lack of unpleasant effects from general anaesthetics - (nausea and vomiting). Most patients are surprised how quickly they can return to their normal activities - generally within a few days to a week.
