FAQ

Is It Safe?

Yes! A study* done in the USA looked at over 15,000 patients who underwent Tumescent Liposculpture under local anaesthesia. Complications that did occur were "infrequent" (less than 1%) and "minor" ( for example - bruising and swelling). There were NO serious complications. That is, NO deaths, NO embolism, NO shock, NO internal injury and NO thrombosis.

The conclusion? "Tumescent Liposculpture is an exceptionally safe method of liposuction under local anaesthesia that eliminates the necessity of general anaesthesia and blood transfusions. Tumescent Liposculpture is safer than liposuction under anaesthesia and results in fewer complications." These results are not applicable when performed under general anaesthesia. * C.W. Hanke et al. Safety of Tumescent Liposuction in 15,336 patients. Dermatol Surg.1995; 21:459 - 462

How soon will I see the difference?

Where large volumes of fat are removed, there is generally an early dramatic result - even as the patient gets off the surgery couch! Even removal of more modest volumes results can usually be seen and or felt within the first few days. Improvements will continue more subtlely for up to 6 months.

Where is the surgery performed?

Surgery is performed in fully accredited hospital theatres at South Bank Day Hospital.  This is in the same building as Body Contour. All the appropriate monitoring equipment is used to maintain your safety and well being.  Surgery is done in a day patient setting which means patients come into hospital the morning of surgery and go home later that day.

Is it Painful?

Actually the whole procedure is surprisingly comfortable, The anesthetic solution numbs the area to be treated, although this may sting at first. The anesthetic is slowly excreted from the body over 1 to 2 days so the post operative period is also relatively pain free.

How much down time is there?

Most people find that they take only a few days to get back into their normal routines. Because of the rapid disappearance of swelling, the minimal bruising, and lack of postoperative pain, most people find that they can hide their surgery quite successfully.

I've heard that you use specially designed instruments?

Yes, the stainless steel instruments are tiny - only 2 to 3 mm in diameter. These are very easy to push through the fatty tissue thereby allowing us to use a very gentle and thorough approach. The smaller instruments permit a smoother removal of fat. Many tiny holes along the sides of the instruments make them much more efficient than those with a fewer number of large holes.

Who is a good candidate?

The best candidates are those who have localised collections of fat and who have realistic expectations of surgery. Most of these people will not be significantly overweight, but even overweight people whose weight has been stable for some time may have certain problem areas and may be excellent candidates.

What is a successful outcome of surgery?

Success is when the patient is happy with results. For this to occur, the patient must have realistic expectations. The goal is not to remove every last bit of fat, but rather to smooth out and to improve the body's contour or outline. Although the results can be spectacular, it is not realistic to expect perfection.

What is the likelihood of loose skin after surgery?

The skin shrinks after surgery and redrapes itself over the new shape. Loose skin is an uncommon problem, except where the skin has been severely stretched, usually through weight gain and or pregnancy.
